SONY has finally released "LAYER CAKE", an infinitely better film than the recent Bond film, "CASINO ROYALE." Yes, they're different in theme, but both star Daniel Craig and while "CR" was supposed to be an intelligent action film, "LAYER CAKE" is far more gripping and while not loaded with action, it is never dull, which "CS" often is.
The plot revolves around a drug dealer planning on getting out of the business, after finishing one last job! Of course, it's never that simple, and "LAYER CAKE" takes the viewer on a whirlwind view of double-crossing, sex, and business, while pulling the viewer by the collar all the way. Everyone's great here and the direction is slick and stylized without ever feeling redundant.
SONY has provided a stellar transfer with the 2.35:1 aspect ratio intact in this 1080p/MPEG-2 image. Colors are often lush and the detail is always deep. No matter the lighting of a scene, everything looks terrific. Scenes vary from one complex color theme to another, but always look flawless!! This ranks with the best blu-ray releases available!
SONY has provided a PCM 5.1 mix that is also outstanding! "LAYER CAKE" features a creative mix. While extremely aggressive, deep bass and subtle effects are always perfectly balanced. The use of select music is paramount to various scenes and the mix pays off well in this aspect, with increased intensity during crucial moments, eg. the scene wherein one witless character gets the crap beaten out of him in a coffee shop to "ORDINARY WORLD" by Duran Duran. The dvd was great, but this blu-ray mix is even better!
SONY has provided tons of extras, including deleted scenes, a Q&A and more!!!
