Unfairly maligned, George Clooney's "LEATHERHEADS" has been released on blu-ray and dvd by UNIVERSAL. Clooney directs and stars in this witty comedy, playing Jimmy Connelly, team captain of the "Bulldogs," one of many teams in the "then" unpopular pro-football league of 1925, struggling to gain popularity and simply stay together, while one team after another disbands. Connelly seems to be moving things in the right direction, by hiring a college football star, Carter Rutherford(John Krasinski)able to draw large crowds due to his status for being the hero responsible for single-handedly forcing a platoon of German soldiers to surrender.
A reporter from the Chicago Tribune, (Renee Zellweger)Lexie Littleton, tries to get a promotion by digging into Rutherford's war past, hoping to disprove his heroics. Of course, a three-way romance ensues, and the story moves ahead at a good pace, blending great dialogue, acting and comedy, culminating in one of the most fun films of 2008. There's so much going for this film, that it's really surprising critics were so hard on it, or hard on it at all! This blu-ray and dvd release may hopefully find the film's well-deserved fan base that it deserves.
UNIVERSAL has provided the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio for the dvd(16:9 enhanced) and 1080p/VC-1 blu-ray release. The blu-ray presents spectacularly vibrant colors, and even when hues are intentionally veered towards earthier colors, detail is still impressive. Scene after scene offers incredible depth and jump-off-the-screen type of detail that one hopes for on blu-ray releases. Black levels are impressive, with deep blacks and grays, providing great detail in darker scenes.
UNIVERSAL has provided a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 Lossless mix. For a comedy, it's surprising to find how aggressive the mix is. Surrounds are active, enhancing the great Randy Newman score, as well as ambient effects, broadening the scope of many scenes, particularly game sequences. Dialogue is always intelligible and never overshadowed by the layers of effects and music. An impressive mix.
Extras include "U-Control" Picture in Picture Video commentary with Clooney and Producer Grant Heslov, (only available for blu-ray players equipped with 1.1)an audio commentary, and "My Scenes," an option for viewers to bookmark their favorite moments for quick access.
