Nominated for "BEST FOREIGN FILM", "LES CHORISTES"(THE CHORUS) is now available on dvd from BUENA VISTA. Set in France during 1949, the story revolves around a teacher whom inspires troubled boys through music, after assuming a new position at a school for troubled kids. The film is obviously inspired by "DEAD POET'S SOCIETY" and several other fine films, but it's generally compared to "MR. HOLLAND'S OPUS." Thank goodness, that last film is "NOTHING" like this! "LES CHORISTES" has its share of moments coming close to overly-sentimental, but it's never as pathetic as the Dreyfus film. That's not to say there aren't some annoying contrivances along the way. There are! Of course, the teacher has to deal with a headmaster whom "doesn't get the kid's needs", etc. But, the narrative is well handled and the film is never slow.
BUENA VISTA has preserved the film's 2.35:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9 enhancement. Colors are solid and the overall image is spectacular! There's incredible detail in every single scene. Contrast is perfect as well, offering terrific detail in even the darkest scenes. Fleshtones appear natural throughout.
BUENA VISTA has included a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. While surrounds are utilized effectively during musical sequences, they're generally restrained during the rest of the film. The front soundstage offers a variety of separation effects throughout the film. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
