FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT is continuing to surprise movie fans with high quality, competitively priced releases of some lesser known, but highly collectible films. “MAGNIFICENT WARRIORS” is one of their most recent titles being released as part of their MARTIAL ARTS COLLECTION. Michelle Yeoh, of “CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON” fame, stars as sort of a female Indiana Jones. Coincidentally, she even has her own whip(?) From the opening scene on, there’s plenty of fun-filled action here. A fair share of comedy is thrown in as well, when through a comical series of misunderstandings, she’s teamed up with a likeable but hobo and a tough companion. The three of them help the inexperienced citizens of a small town fight the ruthless Japanese villains intending to assume their property to build a chemical weapons plant. Alternately campy and thrilling, “MAGNIFICENT WARRIORS” has enough in it to please action fans of all ages.
FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT has provided a wonderful transfer for this release, with 16:9 enhancement. This is also a great improvement over the previously available import dvd of the film. While colors are never vibrant, they’re solid. The image is sharp, and contrast is impressive, with excellent detail in darker scenes. Fleshtones appear natural.
Both an English dub and original Cantonese 5.1 audio mix are offered here. Both are generally fine, however, dialogue in both versions tends to be distorted at times. Music and effects aren’t as distinctively separated as we’d been hoping for. Still, the .1(LFE) kicks in with an effective punch in a few key sequences, and surrounds are also impressive, when engaged.
FOX has included trailers for the other films making up the “MARTIAL ARTS COLLECTION” as well as one for “THE TRANSPORTER”. A still gallery and interviews are also included.
