UNIVERSAL has released the theatrical version of the musical hit, "MAMMA MIA!" on dvd and blu-ray.  Meryl Streep stars in this uplifting, alternately humorous and poignant musical, as Donna, the single mom, whose beautiful daughter is about to get married on the beautiful Greek Island where the hotel she owns is located. Inviting her two friends, members of a former band they belonged to. Without her knowledge, her daughter, Sophie, has invited three men from her mom's past, hoping to find out which is the father she's never known, so that he may walk her down the aisle. Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep both sing well here, and while Pierce Brosnan's voice isn't up to their level by a long shot, it's still entertaining to hear him, something akin to watching Clint Eastwood sing a love song in "PAINT YOUR WAGON," albeit "MAMMA MIA" has a more exotic backdrop!

Some predictable things ensue, but there are plenty of spirited, beautifully touching scenes as well, and all of this has the background music of "ABBA," which surprisingly, works perfectly here, with the film's tone.  "MAMMA MIA" is the kind of film that some will love or hate, but, considering its subject matter, it's much more of a fun family film than one could expect and perfect for the holidays.

UNIVERSAL has provided the correct 2.40:1 aspect ratio for dvd(16:9 enhanced) and the 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 blu-ray.   The dvd presentation of "MAMMA MIA" varies in quality relating to detail and color. Indoor scenes tend to feel too soft and blacks aren't ever deep enough to convey impressive detail. However, outdoor scenes fare much better, with rich colors and semi-improved detail. It's adequate, but disappointing in comparison to some other recent stellar dvd presentations. However, the dvd looks "dreadful" when compared to the "flawless" presentation of the blu-ray!  In scene-to-scene comparisons, the level of depth on blu-ray to dvd, is stunning. Sure, some of the scenes are notably processed on a soundstage, but the detail is still ever-present!  The outdoor scenes, look beautiful, and the level of resolution and deep colors(without a hint of oversaturation) provide consistent "jump-off-the-screen" moments that one hopes for in high-definition. "MAMMA MIA" needs to be seen in BLU-RAY!!!

UNIVERSAL has provided a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix for dvd and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix for blu-ray.  Both mixes do a fine job in providing immersive listening experiences for the viewers, during musical numbers. However, the rest of the film is a bit too front focused. Some ambient effects, such as waves and beach sounds, pop up sporadically, however, it's less engaging than what one would expect, especially when realizing how engulfing the musical sequences can be. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion. The DTS lossy MIX isn't that much discernibly different from the standard Dolby Digital of the dvd, for the most part. But, during musical sequences, the DTS-HD mix clearly outshines the dvd in terms of fidelity, offering notably better bass and range.

Fans of the film will be delighted with the large number of extras provided on both blu-ray and the "2 disc" edition dvd. While we didn't enjoy the numbing commentary, the deleted scenes, outtakes and featurettes, were all worth watching, and as entertaining as they were insightful into the film's impressive production feats. The blu-ray also includes some BD-LIVE features we weren't able to view prior to street date.
