A minor comedy with a big star, "MAN OF THE HOUSE" is now available on dvd
from SONY. Tommy Lee Jones stars as a Texas Ranger assigned to baby-sit and protect five cheerleaders after they witness a murder, by posing as their
coach. As tough as he is, Jones soon realizes he may be "MAN OF THE HOUSE" in name only when the girls show their penchant for doing whatever they want. The film attempts and sometimes succeeds in balancing humor with
mild, tame romance akin to what was achieved in "MISS CONGENIALITY",
especially when the girls wish to build a romance between Jones and a
woman,(Anne Archer)that they know is perfect for him.
SONY has preserved the film's 2.35:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9 enhancement.
Colors are solid, frequently rich and vibrant. Contrast is also impressive,
with excellent detail even in darker scenes. There are some minor
artifacts, but not enough to distract from a generally impressive transfer.
An option for the cropped 1.33:1 image is also available, but it is a complete waste.
SONY has included a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. Unfortunately, it feels very
subdued. There are surround effects, but they often lack the power one
desires to boost many scenes. The bass kicks into gear during key moments.
Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
