WARNER BROS. has released one of their most impressive HD-DVD titles so far! Well, actually there are three of them in the set, "MATRIX, MATRIX RELOADED, MATRIX REVOLUTIONS," but this reviewer only considers the first one a true classic!
WARNER BROS. is releasing an "ULTIMATE MATRIX COLLECTION" on HD-DVD, comprised of many more extras than found in their "COMPLETE MATRIX TRILOGY" boxed set, as well. But, fans of the films who don't want to shell out the extra $20.00, will probably still be satisfied with the "TRILOGY" set alone.
"THE COMPLETE MATRIX TRILOGY" offers all three films in the series, presented in 1080p/VC-1 with the proper 2.35:1 aspect ratio intact. WARNER BROS. has done an outstanding job here, having remastered all three films with a flawless presentation. Especially in comparison to their dvd counterparts, the new image improvements should move any hold-outs, previously uncertain as to whether to jump onto HD-DVD, more comfortable with the leap. All three of the films have their moments of dark scenes, however, these pristine transfers offer detail altogether missing on dvd. Every scene has the "jump off the screen" depth that one wants from "High Definition." And, each individual film offers "Demonstration Quality" presentation from scene to scene. There is really no difference in stunning color and depth between the films. The production design to the film could've presented a potential nightmare for these transfers in terms of color, but they're solid, rich and splendid, without ever feeling oversaturated. They look outstanding! All three of these films rank up their with the best transfers in either hd-dvd or blu-ray thus far!
In addition to the Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 mixes offered, WARNER BROS. has also provided Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mixes for each film! The Wachowski Brothers have really pushed the envelope in high-tech filmmaking for this trilogy and their attention to detail in terms of imagery and sound deserves praise, regardless of whether one buys into the entertainment factor of the narrative structure or not. Nothing is given to chance here, and every scene leaves one appreciating how much detail was given to the sound design. Even during long dialogue scenes, there are subtle things going on with surround or discrete effects, and they're perfectly captured here. While both mixes are filled with stupendous moments, the TrueHD mix offers noticeably better dynamic range as well as bass effects and overall balance. In spite of layers of sound and music effects, dialogue is always perfectly rendered here. OUTSTANDING!!!
WARNER BROS. has done a favor by offering die hard fans of the trilogy who can't get enough the option to pay nominally more for much, much more in terms of featurettes and other extras in the "ULTIMATE MATRIX COLLECTION." However, regular fans of the series should be more than happy enough with the numerous extras included within the "TRILOGY" alone. There are hours of commentaries for each film as well as other supplemental materials!!!
