SONY is releasing "THE MESSENGERS" on both dvd and blu-ray.  The first American film directed by the Pang Brothers, "THE MESSENGERS" succeeds in creating a tense atmosphere.  Unfortunately, there's just nothing new or even slightly original about the plot. A family moves into a farmhouse where bad things have already happened and are about to occur again.  The children in the family start seeing apparitions and hearing things foretelling of horrors around the corner. An abundance of crows is less of an omen than a sign there may not have been a budget for scarier elements to be utilized.

The cast is decent, but needs a better script. Only younger viewers(this is only pg-13)may find some scary entertainment value from this.

SONY has provided a 1080p/MPEG-4 transfer with the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio for the blu-ray.  Colors are rich without succumbing to oversaturation. Detail is always terrific, even within darker moments. While the 16:9 enhanced dvd offers solid colors and contrast, it can't compare in regards to depth or color boldness to what's achieved on the dvd.

SONY has provided a PCM 5.1 mix for the blu-ray and Dolby Digital 5.1 mix for the dvd.  The dvd offers an engaging, aggressive mix. Surrounds are used effectively throughout and dialogue is well balanced. However, the PCM mix of the blu-ray is noticeably better with substantially improved bass and dynamic range.

SONY has provided numerous extras for both formats, including audio commentary and a documentary,(full 1080p for blu-ray)but they become tedious, unless already a big fan of the film.
