Director Renny Harlin's one of those directors whose films can be really, really good(DIE HARD 2, LONG KISS GOODNIGHT) or really, really bad(DEEP BLUE SEA, ADVENTURES OF FORD FAIRLANE) but occasionally there's some in between, eg. "CLIFFHANGER" and now "MINDHUNTERS"!
The premise builds around an FBI training program for FBI profilers taking place on a remote island location. They quickly realize they're in big trouble when they begin to get killed one by one, leading to the conclusion that one of them is actually a serial killer. The plot and its setting feels forced, and most of the "twists" are either predictable or too calculated for their own good, but there are still plenty of fun moments throughout the film. It often feels hokey and like a guilty pleasure, but a pleasure all the same.
BUENA VISTA has preserved the film's 2.35:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement. Director Harlin gives the film an unusual, stylized look that is well polished in spite of colors often intentionally appearing muted. Contrast is impressive with deep blacks and grays. Fleshtones appear natural.
BUENA VISTA has provided a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. While not overly aggressive, it has a consistently nice feel to it, focusing the majority of separation effects towards the front, but offering numerous surround effects during key scenes. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
BUENA VISTA has included some extras, the best being the running commentary with Harlin. He's too technical for it to entertain, but aspiring filmmakers will appreciate it.
