UNIVERSAL has done a terrific job with its dvd presentation of "The Mummy". To begin with, its transfer marks one of the best looking ones so far! This is a demonstration quality release! From the first opening seconds, we're instantly aware of the depth of directional sound we're going to be sitting through for the duration of the film. The music sounds terrific and we're still able to hear the slightest nuances with perfect clarity. The film's opening segment also gives one a feel for the scope of Ancient Egypt and it looks dazzling with flawless clarity and excellent color values. While the 2.35:1 aspect ratio is necessary to maintain the many great visual compositions and epic quality of the film, we're slightly dissapointed that UNIVERSAL didn't elect to offer the P&S version on the same disc as was the case with October Sky. The audio commentary is funny at times, insightful of the filmmaking process at others. The deleted scenes segment doesn't offer too much, but the film's terrific by itself, giving the feel of "Raiders of the Lost Ark".

This reviewer has got to admit, "October Sky" actually "does" win the audience over!!! That quote has been overused for almost every piece of fluff to come out over the past decade, but "October Sky" succeeds because its intentions are modest. The based-on-fact story about a high schooler in a coal mining town of West Virginia, aspiring for greater things, including to fly rockets! The transfer is spectacular, with great black/gray distinction, and strong color values. The dolby digital 5.1 sound offers a fine mix of atmospheric effects and directional effects. The commentary is interesting, but with long pauses at times.
