While younger viewers will most likely enjoy the sequel to "THE MUMMY" film, older viewers will find it lacks the overall fun and pacing of the previous film. Brendan Fraser returns as Jack O'Connell, as does Rachel Weisz(now his wife) and they also have a son! Unfortunately the addition of the son's character does nothing to help the film, and only lessens the film's narrative in much the same way as Goldblum's adopted kid did in "JURASSIC PARK 2."
While the previous film wasn't all that original in terms of concept, it had a genuinely fun, "INDIANA JONES-ish" atmosphere, and "MUMMY RETURNS" often feels muddled instead of exciting. There are even more CGI effects in this sequel than in the previous film, but their overall quality is less impressive, especially in terms of "the scorpion king" sequences, making the film lose even more appeal,
UNIVERSAL has provided the correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio for this 1080p/VC-1 blu-ray release. It's also an obvious remaster over the previously available HD-DVD, and it looks much better! While grain is still present, colors are more vibrant, and the depth is superior in scene-to-scene comparisons over the HD-DVD, offering virtually non-stop "jump off the screen" resolution. Exactly what one hopes for when watching a blu-ray film! There were only a handful of scenes that came across as flat.
UNIVERSAL has provided a DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 mix, and it packs a punch, even when compared to the great mix on its counterpart "THE MUMMY" blu-ray released, being made available simultaneously. Loaded with discrete and bass effects, the surround mix is engulfing and inspired. Music, and layers of ambient effects, are perfectly balanced with dialogue, and never overshadowing it. BRAVO! UNIVERSAL! BRAVO!!!
UNIVERSAL has carried over the extras from the HD-DVD, including commentary and more. But, the best part is the "U-CONTROL" option, incorporating 1.1 technology, and allowing for plenty of PIP benefits for fans of the film, to boost their viewing pleasure, after their initial viewing.
