FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT has released the entire first season of "NYPD BLUE" on dvd as a boxed set.
Some may remember back when even a glimpse of someone's rear was inconceivable on network television, but "NYPD BLUE" intentionally prided itself on pushing those boundaries whenever it could, and at times, even at the expense of an otherwise bold and creative new show.
While the first season demonstrates some of the great writing that's kept the show going for so many years, it also offers plenty of examples of the show's most annoying contrivances as well, especially its transparent attempt to always "push the envelope." The language and infrequent shots of one naked character or another end up becoming parodies of themselves. Still, the cast is terrific, and it's easy to recognize that David Caruso's acclaim wasn't overdone. He is terrific, as is the whole cast.
FOX has preserved the show's original 1.33:1 aspect ratio. It's a terrific transfer! It's slick looking throughout, and while not quite film-like, it offers great depth and clarity. Colors vary in terms of saturation, but they're always dead-on! Contrast is excellent, offering flawless resolution in darker scenes. Fleshtones appear natural throughout.
FOX has provided a Dolby 2.0 Surround mix, offering a fair share of directional effects during key sequences in the front soundstage. The mono surround kicks in to boost the show's terrific score at just the right moments.
FOX has included some worthwhile supplements here. A "MAKING OF DOCUMENTARY" offers insight behind the show's actual development, and includes interviews with the creative team.
FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT has also provided several commentaries. Director Brad Silberling(Casper, City of Angels)offers his perspective on two of the episodes he helmed(6&10), and while it's a bit dull in spots, he does provide the kind of information an aspiring t.v. director will appreciate. Creator David Milch's commentary offers more of a creative note, and the best commentary belongs to actress Sharon Lawrence, detailing the actor's side of production.
We also get script-to-screen comparisons and filmographies of the more celebrated talent.
