An ensemble cast of great talent, led by Will Ferrell, Luke Wilson and Vince Vaughn, help make "OLD SCHOOL" a great comedy classic, deserving to be in every film lover's collection. The assorted crew, dealing with either unfaithful wives or other calamities in growing older, find their own meaning in forming a fraternity that rivals any other in terms of pure fun, gross out jokes and an even more odd collection of pledges. Every character, no matter how small, lends to the film's overall winning, often hilarious atmosphere. While "OLD SCHOOL" is a "guy's" focused-comedy, this doesn't mean the female characters are overlooked, in fact, all of these actresses add greatly, though to a lesser degree to the film's impact and narrative.
While not a fan of any of writer/director Todd Phillips' other films, "OLD SCHOOL" is arguably, fantastic!
PARAMOUNT /DREAMWORKS has provided the correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio for this 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 blu-ray. While the colors are never vibrant, the image offers notably better detail than the dvd, and the majority of the film offers terrific depth. Grain pops up sporadically but is never intrusive enough to mar the otherwise fine image.
A Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix is offered, and while notably better than the dvd mix, offers little in the way of surround effects. Still, the lossy mix provides terrific fidelity, with the exception of a particular band sequence, and the front-focused separation effects are terrific. Ambient and bass effects kick in sporadically, and while impressive, leave the listener wishing surrounds were more active throughout.
All of the great extras found on the dvd have been carried over, although only presented in standard resolution. The best of these, a take-off on "INSIDE THE ACTOR'S STUDIO" featuring Ferrell reprising his SNL role of James Lipton, should not be missed. The theatrical trailer is presented in full HD.
