SRP $16.99 1.85:1 DTS-HD MA 2.0 MGM/FOX

One of those '80s comedies, not destined for anything near "classic" status, but considerably more entertaining than most from that period, "OVERBOARD," is now available on blu-ray from MGM/FOX.  Goldie Hawn plays Joanna, a spoiled, bitchy heiress, impatiently waiting for her yacht to be repaired in Oregon. Kurt Russell stars as Dean, the carpenter hired to do repairs, and in doing so, he sees first-hand how nasty Joanna is to everyone around her.  When Joanna falls overboard, she awakens with amnesia in a local hospital. Not remembering anything of her past, Dean decides to take advantage of this situation and for the unpaid work he's still owed, by convincing her they're married and that his four unruly children are theirs! While everything that follows, including the change of heart, ridiculous ending, is predictable, Russel's performance and the few, decent moments of the script make "OVERBOARD" more entertaining than it probably deserves to be.

MGM/FOX has provided the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio for this AVC MPEG-4 1080p blu-ray.  Colors are adequate but never rich. In fact, there's nothing about the look of this blu-ray making it superior to the standard dvd presentation. Worse, darker scenes suffer from artifacts that aren't present on dvd. Grain is frequent and often intrusive. A mediocre image.

MGM/FOX has provided a DTS-HD 2.0 mix. While there's some minor separation, there are no discernible surround effects. While many comedy mixes are decidedly front center channel focused, many newer ones are opened up with ambient effects. Even '80s mixes generally benefit from remixed enhancements, as with the UNIVERSAL entries for John Hughes's films of that period. While this mix is disappointing in comparison to many comedy mixes(that say's a lot!), it's not awful. It's just so-so.

For fans of "OVERBOARD," at least this blu-ray offers the right aspect ratio and it's not horrible looking. So, if not owning the dvd, the low MSRP means it can likely be found at a good, low price, and it's certain to provide fine family entertainment.
