Mel Gibson stars as the "Patriot", a tough father, devoted to ending British tyranny by any means necessary, especially after a British Colonel has killed one of his own. While it takes great liberty with historical accuracy, if its overall aim is to entertain and bring the audience to its feet, it succeeds. Although heavily manipulative, it's hard not to cheer, because it's been earned by a great narrative, epic atmosphere and fine acting.
The battle scenes are outstanding and there are plenty here. Additionally, the production design is incredible and really brings the audience into the time period depicted.
SONY has preserved the film's 2.35:1 ratio with 16:9 enhancement. It looks just as good as the previous version, including the newly inserted footage. Colors are great and grain is not to be found anywhere. Contrast is excellent.
SONY has provided a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix, and while it's disappointing that the "SUPERBIT" DTS 5.1 mix isn't included, the Dolby Digital is excellent, offering terrific, non-stop atmospheric moments and plenty of discrete surround effects, particularly during the battle scenes. Dialogue is always intelligible, even during multi-layered effects.
There are four short featurettes, but the commentary from the previous version has been excised.
The 10 minutes of new footage doesn't really add depth to the film, however, if one doesn't already own either previous version, this is the one to get.
