"PATTON" is one of those great films that can be revisited many times, and never feels dated, or less impressive. Featuring a great script by Francis Ford Coppola and tight, but sweeping direction from Franklin J. Schaffner, and great performances, particularly from Oscar Winner George C. Scott, "PATTON" is a big film, telling a story about a larger than life character, in the setting of a big War!
While the film does glamorize someone who was arguably an a--hole and Nazi sympathizer, it doesn't particularly sugarcoat the guy either. The script manages to interweave its historical depiction of battles and important events involving the lead figure, it never feels like the patted down bio-pics of today! While newer audiences may be at first disappointed, if expecting a "war" film, the great drama of "PATTON" should win them over in the end. It's a great film!
FOX has provided the correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio for this 1080p/MPEG-4 blu-ray release. How did Fox do with this blu-ray presentation? As is made obvious, in the famous opening sequence wherein Patton steps in front of a giant American flag, giving one of many great speeches in the film,...OUTSTANDING!!!
Colors are surprisingly vibrant in scene after scene. Surprising, because no other video presentation, laserdisc or various dvds, ever offered such rich color levels. Without any over-saturation, colors are continuously stunning! The contrast is flawless and blacks are inky with depth. The level of detail, along with the other elements of this presentation make it reference quality and one of the best blu-rays released in 2008!
As impressive as the image is, the DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio mix, isn't! While not horrible, surrounds are barely used and bass effects lack the impact one hopes for with this kind of film. Dialogue is always intelligible and well presented throughout. The score, one of Jerry Goldsmith's best, thankfully, is well complimented through all the speakers, with nearly flawless fidelity.
Coppola provides a full commentary, and all of the other features are presented in Standard resolution. Fans of the film will be delighted with the number of extras here, offering great insight into the film's production and the real lead figure.
