“THE PERFECT STORM” is close to a “classic” film.  Although most of the audience knows the demise awaiting the fishermen on their craft from the beginning, it doesn’t prevent viewers from leaning on the edge of their seats during one scene after another. The story also demonstrates that one can do heroic things, regardless of the end result.

WARNER BROS. has provided a stunning transfer for this HD-DVD. As we are still annoyed with the problem facing all hd-dvds as of this time, there is no player available to put out the actual full 1080p provided on the disc!!!! C’mon already!!!!

Still, the 1080i image is wonderful! The locations, extensive special effects and other aspects of the film are really put to the test here, and they consistently amaze the viewer with the flawless detail in every scene!  Since most of the film takes place during the historic storm, fine detail is even more impressive with the inherently darker atmosphere and grey clouds. These darker scenes have the same richness of color and flawless contrast as the brightest scenes during a clear day in the film.

WARNER BROS. has provided a DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 PLUS soundmix. While the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix offered on the standard dvd was quite good, the “PLUS” mix here offers even greater fine detail in virtually every scene.  While the surround mix isn’t overly aggressive, there are plenty of discrete effects and the mix offers one of the most impressive sound environments of any film released thus far on dvd or HD-DVD.

Dialogue is always intelligible although there are times where the sounds of nature take intentional precedence.

All of the extras from the DVD have been carried over.
