While "POCAHONTAS" has been available on dvd already, it hasn't been enhanced for 16:9 tv before this "10TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION". Originally panned by critics for its historical revisionism, there's plenty to recommend about it. Sure, it's not to be viewed for a history lesson, but how many animated films from DISNEY are? DISNEY has actually painted a picture of Native Indians far better than as depicted in many of the films to come from HOLLYWOOD. And, while the ending isn't perfect, it's not the typical predictable ending found in most DISNEY films. The music is quite memorable as well!
The voice-casting is terrific. Mel Gibson is wonderful as the voice of John Smith, and the supporting cast is flawless. Gibson gets even more screen-time in the "special edition" version included on this 2 disc set, with a newly included, previously deleted song, "IF I NEVER KNEW YOU."
BUENA VISTA is now offering "THX-CERTIFICATION" for this 10th Anniversary release!
The 1.66:1 image is flawless! Colors are much more vibrant now, and grain is virtually non-existent. DEMONSTRATION QUALITY THROUGHOUT!
The wonderful music and score from Alan Menken gets a superior presentation for this release over the previously available one. Surrounds are more active in enhancing the score, but still restrained for non-musical segments. The front soundstage is more aggressive with separation effects now. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
Both the original version and the new version(including the previously deleted song)are offered on disc one. An audio commentary with the film's directors and producer, is offered on the Anniversary edition.
There are plenty of extras included as well, but most of them, (featurettes)will appeal to adult fans.
