"PORKY'S" was a low-brow hit when released in 1981. It
actually approached humor with an immaturity that rivaled "Hollywood
Knights", not an easy thing to do! But, it did have a sense of
nostalgia to it, in no small part due to Director Bob Clark's talent in this
area. He displayed this knack for detail later with "A CHRISTMAS
STORY" as well. "PORKY's" was actually followed by two
sequels, and we wish "PORKY's 3", the better of the sequels was
included, but at least FOX has included the first two films on one dvd for one
low price! Dan Monahan(Ally McBeal) stars as Pee Wee. The joke
behind his name is used numerous times in this film. The film depicts the
'50s in and around Angel Beach High. "PORKY'S" succeeds in some
ways of
being original, in that this time period in Florida has seldom been captured on
screen. Where the film doesn't differentiate itself from any number of teen
films, is that the kids are constantly depicted in trying to
out-"prank" the other kids, with each joke becoming more ludicrous and
urbane! "PORKY'S" is a trip club that the teenage boys
starring in the film want to get into. When they do get in, briefly,
they're thrown out, but only after being fleeced and embarrassed by the owner
and the corrupt sheriff. "These" are the villains! Another
villain is the high school's girl gym coach, Mrs. Ballbricker. This is a
cliché, but one has to admit the infamous hole in the shower scene is funny!
The majority of the film deals with how the boys get revenge on both "PORKY'S"
and the gym coach.
"PORKY'S 2" takes place the very morning after "PORKY'S"
left off! While the Porky's II takes place the morning after Porky's I.
The group of kids is trying to put on a Shakespearian play, but is thwarted by
the "villain" Reverend Flavel. Flavel is a walking cliché too,
but it's all in good fun, and when the KKK gets involved, one can't help but
feel there's some kind of decent message underlying the immaturity of the film.
While many may feel they've seen these jokes before, it's important to at least
give Bob Clark his due! Many popular teen films were influenced by "PORKY'S"!
FOX deserves credit for presenting both films in their proper 1.85:1 aspect
ratio with 16:9 enhancement. "PORKY'S" has more signs of wear
and tear than does the sequel. It also exhibits grain in a few scenes.
However, colors are generally solid. Fleshtones are natural, and the contrast is
fine, with deep blacks and grays.
"PORKY'S 2" has an improved transfer in comparison. While the
image is still a bit soft at times, the colors are sharper than in the first
film, and it has no real signs of aging. The image has a generally
well-polished look to it.
FOX has presented both films with a "new" Dolby Surround 2.0 mix, as
well as the original Mono tracks. There are virtually no
"surround" moments, except for music and a few atmospheric effects.
But, this is a dialogue-driven comedy. The dialogue is well focused and
intelligible on both films, however "PORKY's" presents some minimal
distortion at times, while "PORKY'S 2" is free of it entirely.
The original theatrical trailers for both films are featured.
