Director Stephen Hopkins has always displayed an MTV-like editing style. His films tend to look slick, but they're typically devoid of any emotional substance. While the original "PREDATOR" didn't offer extreme character development, it resembles a play from Ibsen when compared to "PREDATOR 2."
"PREDATOR 2" plays out like a fun, video game. The alien has landed in the streets of L.A. and is feasting on a variety of its inhabitants, including gangsters, drug dealers, and more. It's up to tough cop Danny Glover to stop him. Glover does a decent job, but the film's burdened with Maria Conchita Alonso as a tough cop also. She's not convincing, even momentarily. Gary Busey also appears, and offers the over-the-top "bad" acting he's so well known for.
One advantage over the previous film relates to the focus on the "Predator's" weaponry. We see it in greater detail here, as well as its sense of vision, adding greatly to some of the films more intense moments.
FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT has provided the films correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9 enhancement. It looks outstanding! From the film's opening sequence to the end, there's excellent clarity. Colors are bold and flawless throughout! Contrast is also excellent, offering deep blacks and grays. Fleshtones appear natural.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is extremely aggressive. Hopkins loves an engulfing atmosphere, and that's what we have here! Bullets, explosions and bodies fly all around, making the most of the surround and directional effects. There is also a fair share of .1 LFE effects for the subwoofer to get a workout.
Along with the film's trailer, we get two brief featurettes. The better of the two examines the film's special effects regarding the predator's weapons.
