Two aspiring magicians turn against one another when a tragedy occurs during their most famous act to the beautiful assistant/paramour to one of them. Their animosity towards one another reaches increasing brutality as they seek to one up each other, as they race to find the most spectacular act possible. Directed by Christopher Nolan, even with some complicated narrative structure, "THE PRESTIGE" is a much better and more accessible film than "MEMENTO," and more satisfying than "BATMAN BEGINS." "THE PRESTIGE" is truly one of those rare films, making one want to revisit it after it's just ended to answer more questions to "answers" just revealed!
The 19th century setting serves the story well, bringing audiences into a new world, that's made even more compelling due to the bizarre story. It's a daring film and it pays off, although some will undoubtedly be unhappy with a "TWILIGHT ZONE" type of conclusion.
The acting by everyone involved, Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine and more, is excellent! Scarlett Johansson is possibly more beautiful than ever before.
BUENA VISTA has provided a 1080p/MPEG-4 transfer with 2.35:1 aspect ratio intact. It's a spectacular image! "THE PRESTIGE" is one of the best looking transfers released by any studio so far! Although many scenes are intentionally dark in nature, colors are typically vibrant. The detail is exquisite in every single instance. Contrast is absolutely flawless, boasting some of the deepest blacks and grays imaginable! BRAVO!!! All transfers should only look this good!
BUENA VISTA has provided a PCM 5.1 mix. While ambient effects are restrained, discrete effects and surrounds are cleverly utilized for maximum effect during the right moments with a huge impact. There are some great bass moments as well and dialogue is always intelligible.
All of the extras from the dvd have been carried over.
