One of the best family films of all time, "THE PRINCESS BRIDE," is now available on blu-ray from FOX. Originally released over 20 years ago, Rob Reiner somehow managed to make a seemingly un-filmable classic by William Goldman, a film classic! Of course, it helped that Goldman crafted a stellar adaptation from his own work. Robin Wright and Cary Elwes star as Buttercup and Westley, the two fairy-tale lovers leading the story being told by a grandfather(Peter Falk)to his sick grandson(Fred Savage). But, there are many thoroughly captivating characters within the tale, and Reiner manages to craft a film that is alternatively romantic, thrilling and hilarious, sometimes even within an individual scene!
It's hard to imagine anyone not being won over by "THE PRINCESS BRIDE," and with the spectacular presentation provided herein, it's a no-brainer for film lovers, looking to build up their collection with sure-fire entertainment.
FOX has provided the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio for this 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 blu-ray. The film's production design weaves between a fantasy and natural-like atmosphere, all perfectly complimented with the deep colors here. Scene to scene comparison with dvd, showcase notably better color and contrast. The costumes and sets offer flawless detail in every scene. Some slight, but intentional grain is present, giving the viewer a film-like experience. Blacks are inky, providing great depth in some of the darker scenes. "THE PRINCESS BRIDE" is a great example of the high quality an older catalogue title can and should receive on blu-ray!
FOX has provided a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix. It's outstanding! To begin with, every previous format, VHS, laserdisc and dvd, never offered the full immersion available here! And, while Andre the Giant, was never known for a great speaking voice, it was still annoying to have to strain and rewind other formats to pick up lines that sounded garbled before. It's not a problem with the lossy mix. Everything about this mix is spectacular! The clarity of dialogue is consistent, even when layered amidst numerous bass, music and 360 degree effects! "THE PRINCESS BRIDE" offers a mix that is notably better than previous efforts and holds its own next to more recent state-of-the-art soundmixes! GREAT JOB, FOX!
FOX has provided plenty of extras for this release. Two audio commentaries are offered, one with Reiner and another with Goldman. Both offer plenty of insight regarding the film's development and production, but both are likely to wear out the casual audience, due to the dry manner of the speakers involved.
There are various featurettes, including an intriguing video diary by Elwes and more. All of these(unfortunately)are offered in only 480p, but the film's trailer is offered in full 1080p.
