SRP $24.98 1.85:1(16:9) DOLBY SURROUND COLUMBIA TRISTAR

PUNCHLINE

The title’s a bit misleading, because those expecting a comedy are certain to be disappointed.  “PUNCHLINE” is actually a drama. It just happens to be set within the arena of standup comics, but the focus of the film is the relationship between Tom Hanks and Sally Field.

Tom Hanks plays a former med student trying his hand at standup. Sally Field plays a beleaguered housewife looking for the attention and validation she lacks at home.  After Hanks tries to give Field some advice to help her with her act, and she becomes more of an attraction than he does! It’s kind of akin to “A STAR IS BORN” with comedians!

The acting is really good, due to the cast, but even fine performances are hindered by the corniness and predictability of the script.  John Goodman, as the unappreciative husband, becomes entirely reformed and loving due to his appreciation of Field’s jokes???

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has presented the film in its proper 1.85:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement.  Colors aren’t bold, but they’re stable and even bright at times.  The image has a nice glossy look to it, and contrast is excellent, with deep blacks and grays, essential for the darker nightclub scenes.  Fleshtones appear natural throughout.

The soundmix is a dolby Digital 2.0 surround track. Surrounds are mostly inactive, except for audience effects. The front soundstage offers a fair amount of spatial effects. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
