Occasionally, a really bold, high-spirited, beautiful new series debuts, and doesn't find its rightful audience. This could've been the case with "PUSHING DAISIES," a terrific series, having its dvd and blu-ray debut, September 16, by Warner Bros. The premise, a young boy finds that he has the power to reanimate someone who's died, with just the touch of his finger. The sad ramifications, however, lie in that if he touches that person again, they die forever, and if he doesn't touch them again within a minute, someone must die in their place. This premise, as strange as it may seem, brings about so many soulful, heart-touching storylines and overtones, it's impossible to do them justice here.
But, after watching the first episode, it's a real challenge not to be hooked! This reviewer never gave the show a fair chance, before catching it on a flight with British Airways. The small screen didn't do it justice, but the show worked its magic. After watching the blu-ray set from WARNER BROS, "PUSHING DAISIES" is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful looking shows "ever" created, in addition to being a great show!
The production design to this series is amazing in every way imaginable. Virtually every scene is shot with the same care Sam Mendes utilized with "AMERICAN BEAUTY," and from the opening credits to the end, the show moves with a great pace, but optimistic, poignant, atmosphere.
The cast is terrific, and it's great to see Chi McBride in a series this good, even in a supporting role. Typically, narration is a device used by writers that have problems with exposition. But, occasionally, it can actually aid a film or tv show's atmosphere; that's the case here! It's one of the few series wherein narration is actually a great thing, lending yet another layer of magic to an already magical environment.
WARNER BROS. has provided the correct 1.78:1 aspect ratio for this 1080p blu-ray. As expected, the colors are pushed to the extremes, without any oversaturation; not a small feat for a show with such such an elaborate production design! The colors are vivid throughout and the detail from scene-to-scene, is so impressive, that "PUSHING DAISIES" ends up being one of the best looking blu-rays to come out blu-ray in 2008, thus far. That's a lot of praise for a tv series, as typically the best looking blu-rays have been brand new motion picture releases. Blacks are inky enough to allow for great depth in some of the darker scenes. A great looking transfer!
WARNER BROS has provided a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. While, we'd have preferred a Lossless mix, the mix is extremely effective, even without relying on aggressive surrounds. There is plenty of separation on the front stage, and the music...., ahh, the music, terrific! The score, discrete effects, creative panning/directional effects, all blend with perfect balance. A fine mix.
