"PYTHON."
Casper Van Dien stars in this tale about a giant "Python."
Not too
original of an idea, but fun just the same. A lot of has-beens appear
throughout the film. Watch out for Jenny McCarthy's brief appearance as
snake food.
The special effects aren't really that "special." While
technology has
jumped by leaps and bounds since the effects of the original "King
Kong", computer generated effects are still only impressive to a point.
The snake, as big as it appears, just isn't that convincing!
While "PYTHON" is basically a B-movie picked up and distributed by
FOX, we have to give them credit for giving this release superb treatment!
The 1.85:1 aspect ratio is intact with 16:9 enhancement. Color values are
extremely solid! Fleshtones appear natural throughout! There's great
detail in every scene(also revealing the limitations of the special effects) and
there's no artifacting!
The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mix is fairly aggressive. While the
directional effects aren't going non-stop, they're present enough to make a
favorable impression, offering split-effects from all speakers. The .1 LFE
effects are restrained, but effective.
FOX has included a fair share of supplements! There's a screen commentary
with the film's director, Richard Clabaugh, visual effects director, Andrew
Hoffman, and visual effects artist, Kevin Little. While it would be easy
to dismiss their commentary as unimportant, that would be a mistake. They
have a great rapport with each-other, and their passion for filmmaking in
general, comes across from beginning to end. There is an
"outtakes" section, but it's so brief, less than two minutes, that
it's not worth including. To make it worse, the outtakes have been edited
in a music-video style, without the actual dialogue. A theatrical trailer
and teaser for "PYTHON" are also included.
