Akira Kurosawa's films cry out for anamorphic treatment, and while we're
disappointed that WINSTAR didn't present "RAN" in this manner, we're
still grateful that its proper aspect ratio is preserved, and the picture looks
quite good overall! The plot is basically a Japanese retelling of
"King Lear", set in 16th Century Japan. Kurosawa utilizes
framing and color like no other director, and the transfer here compliments his
vision. The costumes contribute greatly to the "epic" feel of
the film, and while the depth of image could be sharper, fleshtones are natural,
and the colors are vibrant. The stereo sound offers no directional
effects, but the music is breathtaking and dialogue is well balanced.
