Director Michael Caton-Jones' Rob Roy is nothing short of a classic! The film is made with the sort of intelligence for its audience, style, and craftsmanship, rarely seen in Hollywood over the past few decades. The plot, involving a man who's tricked and decieved into fighting nobility in historic Scotland offers commentary on heroism, honor and cruelty. It also has one of the greatest, and realistic sword fights in film history. While the laser disc version featured a wonderful picture and sensational sound quality with Dolby Digital 5.1, the DVD release offers an even better picture than previously realized. The clarity and overall color to every scene is breathtaking. There's plenty of wonderful panoramic moments in the film that would be lost with cropping, which is probably why MGM didn't bother offering a P&S version as they typically do. The Dolby Digital 5.1 is slightly less dimensional than the laser disc, but its overall effectiveness is equivalent to it. A theatrical trailer is included.
