BUENA VISTA has re-released "THE SANTA CLAUSE" to coincide with the theatrical release of its sequel, "THE SANTA CLAUSE 2."  But, this time it's a "Special Edition, even without a commentary.

Allen plays a big executive at a toy company, whose recent divorce has caused him to spend less time with his son.  Finally, on Christmas eve, the two spend an evening together, and tragedy, albeit a darkly humorous one, strikes, when Allen accidentally causes Santa Clause to plummet to his death from their rooftop after being surprised by him.  Allen must put on the Santa suit and assume the responsibility of becoming Santa, assuming the mantle unintentionally passed to him.

There are some great laughs in this film, and adults and children alike will find it entertaining.  As the plotline suggests, there are also some syrupy moments, but it's no more overly sentimental than the first "HOME ALONE" film.

BUENA VISTA has preserved the film's 1.85:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement.  The transfer is great, offering a slick image and great detail in every scene.  Colors are rich throughout, and contrast is flawless. Fleshtones appear natural.  A great transfer.

BUENA VISTA has provided a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. While there are some ambient effects in which the surrounds are used, they're mostly reserved for the film's score.  Directional effects are focused towards the front soundstage. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.

As this is a "Special Edition," BUENA VISTA has included several featurettes.  "SO YOU WANNA BE AN ELF" offers "behind-the-scenes" footage, but it's really too brief to be "entertaining."

"MAKING SANTA SNACKS WITH WOLFGANG"  is actually kind of fun, and something the whole family can appreciate.  Wolfgang Puck demonstrates how to make some great snacks to enjoy with the film.

A game, "SANTA'S HELPER" is also included, along with theatrical trailers for numerous other DISNEY releases.  A
