"SAVING GRACE," a quirky british comedy, has been released on dvd
by NEW LINE. The Grace of the film's title, is a widow, burdened with
debts, and forced to find the means to fight off creditors seeking to take
everything from her. Her "green thumb" comes in handy as she
begins to find lucrative earnings in the farming of Marijuana! While the
film is extremely funny, and even heartwarming at times, it's not a
"pro-drug" film. It's simply exploring the bizarre circumstances
that people find themselves in at times.
The film carefully switches gears between drama and comedy with a rare finesse,
seldom found in "bigger" studio pictures.
The film's original 2.35:1 aspect ratio is intact with 16:9 enhancement.
The color values are solid, often vibrant, and with a picture that offers
terrific clarity. The contrast offers deep blacks and grays. Even
the
darkest scenes offer great clarity. Fleshtones appear natural throughout.
The dolby digital 5.1 sound mix isn't extremely aggressive, but it offers
its fair share of directional effects. .1 LFE effects are used sparingly,
but effectively. There are two audio commentaries offered as supplements.
Stars Brenda Blethyn and Craig Furguson, along with Director Nigel Cole, are
together for the first commentary. While this one's interesting, and
filled with insight into character development and motivation. it doesn't sound
screen specific in tone. The 2nd commentary is with Cole, Furguson, and
writer Mark Crowely. Is screen-specific, and explores the film's actual
production
with great detail!
