The great tv series, "FIREFLY," from creator Joss Whedon(Speed) was short-lived. Fortunately, however, UNIVERSAL gave fans and newcomers the opportunity to see a theatrical film, including the cast and the creative elements, which made the series so original. After a terrific opening sequence, the plot carefully explains why a doctor and his younger sister are being chased across space by a deadly government operative. Of course, the captain of the ship, "Serenity," is less than pleased with the chaos affecting his smuggling operation, but soon enough he and the crew choose sides and embark on a thrilling adventure, with a script capturing the kind of story-line found in the best of "STAR TREK" episodes of long ago.
The script is clever enough to allow audience members, with no knowledge of the series to catch on to what drives the various characters and there's an ample share of humor, coinciding with the great effects and action, to make "SERENITY" one of the better sci-fi/action films of the past decade.
UNIVERSAL has provided the correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio for this 1080p/VC-1 blu-ray. While much of the film has a decisively dark look, colors are consistently vibrant. Darker scenes offer stellar detail, due to the inky blacks. Virtually every scene offers the kind of jump-off-the-screen depth one hopes for with high-definition.
UNIVERSAL has upgraded the soundmix over the previously impressive HD-DVD release, with a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix. It's outstanding! "SERENITY" offers an aggressive mix, filled with dynamic panning, discrete and surround effects throughout. Even the more subtle ambient effects demonstrate the potential of a great lossy mix. "SERENITY" offers one of the best demonstration quality mixes currently available!
Deleted scenes, along with all of the great commentaries, featurettes and great offerings found on the previous HD-DVD and special dvd release, have been carried over, of course with more goodies, due to BD-LIVE capability!
