Set on the eve of the 1968 Presidential election, "SHAMPOO" captures a period in history with enough wit, humor and poignancy to make one aware it's a classic while watching it! Warren Beatty stars as George, a gifted hairdresser as sexually active and guilt-free as,....Warren Beatty! When he's not having sex with the numbers of women clamoring for his attention at this salon, he's busy with them after hours at their homes, sometimes while their husbands are away. Jack Warden gives one of the most overlooked performances of the '70s as Lester, a naive but likeable rich executive, whose wife(Lee Grant) is messing around with George. Making things more complicated, George has a mistress(Julie Christie) whom is also messing around with George. Goldie Hawn is terrific as the cheery, loveable, and sympathetic "sometime" girlfriend of George.
While following George as he weaves in, out and around these relationships, we're also witnessing the beginning of the demise of faith in government via the ongoing election coverage. The brilliant script and direction showcases the hypocrisy relating to the sexual revolution and conservatism in a manner that maintains its emotional power decades later!
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has preserved the film's 1.85:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement. It's generally a sharp transfer. Colors are solid, although never vibrant. The contrast is decent, although darker scenes lack the definition associated with COLUMBIA TRISTAR transfers offering superior black/gray definition. Fleshtones appear natural.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has provided a monaural track for this release. It lacks the fidelity we would've liked, especially due to a great live performance by Jefferson Airplane. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
Trailers for Bugsy, Cactus Flower and Mr. Deeds, have been included.
