COLUMBIA TRISTAR is acquiring some "Creature Feature" remakes for its library, and "She-Creature" is the first of them to be released. The opening sequence, wherein we're introduced to the likeable conman/carnival barker, Rufus Sewell and his beautiful girlfriend, Carla Gugino, is excellent. The director creates a really hypnotic atmosphere, which is quite unusual for the tale about to unfold. Sewell has Cugino appear in his travelling show as a mermaid able to temper the fury of a cave-man like monster, all of them part of an act. When an aging seaman finds out their mermaid is fake, he brings them to his lavish residence, where "his" mermaid is real. There's some real suspense and character development here, as the audience is uncertain whether the beautiful mermaid is as evil as her captor describes. But, as the rest of the film shows, when the mermaid is transported across the ocean by ship, everyone is in immediate danger.
The film is promoted as being a Special Effects-type film. There's even a commentary with Stan Winston, but it's disappointing that there are so few special effects on screen. There are some great ones, when they do happen, but they're few and far between!
The film has been released with its 1.85:1 aspect ratio and 16:9 enhancement. The image is awesome! Colors are bold and vibrant. There's no oversaturation, and fleshtones are perfect. Contrast offers deep, deep blacks and grays. The Dolby Surround mix focuses on the front soundstage, but there is some rear activity during crucial scenes. The rears are used mostly for boosting of the score.
While the commentary is appreciated, there's little in the way of special effects for Winston to comment on.
