A far too brief, animated spin-off of "SHREK" for the holidays, "SHREK THE HALLS" is available on dvd, from DREAMWORKS. Picking up some time after the "SHREK THE THIRD" film has ended, the lovable ogre is planning to offer a wonderful traditional Christmas for his untraditional family. Believing in the importance of telling the story behind Christmas to his kids, the tales of Donkey and others from the Shrek films, keep getting in the way. While there are some genuine laughs here, things feel haphazard at times, and in less than a 30 minute running time, that's a disappointing thing.
The quality of the animation is still great, but, again,...30 minutes??? Youngsters will enjoy this short tale, and it's cleaner than the films were(originally made for tv airing), so those who end up liking it might find it worth owning for a regular Christmas holiday diversion for the kids while adults are putting the toys together.
DREAMWORKS has provided the correct 1.78:1 aspect ratio, with an option for full-frame as well. Colors are solid and vibrant. Blacks are deep, allowing for terrific detail throughout. It's a very impressive transfer.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is not in the same league of creativity as the films were. Surrounds kick in to boost the songs, but most of the mix is front speaker focused.
Some "sing-a-long" songs and a matching game are included.
