This reviewer was excited about seeing "FRANK MILLER'S SIN CITY" since first hearing about its production and cast! Jessica Alba playing a stripper??? Mickey Rourke making a comeback? But, after viewing the trailer, the anticipation grew by leaps and bounds! The theatrical trailer, much like the one for "KILL BILL: VOLUME ONE" has got to be one of the most exciting, well-conceived, well-edited, trailers in the past few years! Seldom has a music score blended so well with the imagery in a short time span to get the heart pumping as the one for "SIN CITY" managed to do!
That being said, while "FRANK MILLER'S SIN CITY" is certainly not for the masses, it's a satisfying, engaging adventure and is highly recommended!
Many comic book/illustrated novellas don't translate well to the screen, eg. Neil Gaman's "NEVERWHERE". But, "SIN CITY" is gripping from beginning to end, and makes one unfamiliar with the series, want to read it in its entirety!
"Sin City" is one of the few film-noir films that actually works! The imagery perfectly compliments the look of the original material and colors, when used add punch! The reverse use of black and white for raindrops is just one brilliant example of what the film manages to achieve again and again and again. The melodramatic acting is also on target for the "Spillane-like" dialogue. While Jessica Alba doesn't get to showcase her acting range, she's beautiful as ever and (not an insult)would quite probably be the "most-perfect" Bond girl ever! She is simply beautiful. Bruce Willis gives a great performance with a character not necessitating range. But, Mickey Rourke is the real standout here! It's the most impressive performance he's given since "ANGEL HEART" and leaves one wanting to see more of him.
BUENA VISTA has preserved the film's 1.85:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement. It's flawless! There's incredible detail in every frame and contrast is perfect!
BUENA VISTA has included a Dolby Digital/DTS 5.1 option for the soundmix. While both stand out as being incredible, the DTS offers a wider range of surround clarity. Plenty of bass effects here too! Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
