WARNER BROS. is continuing to offer excellent collections of their better tv series, and one of the best, "SMALLVILLE," is certain to make a great addition to every fan's collection.
"SMALLVILLE" manages to succeed as a revisionist take on the "Superman" legend, targeted towards a youthful audience, but offering enough creativity and charm, to make dedicated fans of most viewers.
From the very first episode, the well known tale of Kal-El's arrival, has been turned upside down, but in a manner that works, and sets up much of what's to come in following episodes. As the great Richard Donner film, "SUPERMAN" showed, there were compelling stories to be told of Superman as a teenager, and "SMALLVILLE" focuses on just that, with excellence. The youthful cast, including the beautiful Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lange, are all outstanding.
WARNER BROS. has presented the series in 1.78:1 with 16:9 enhancement. Colors tend to be oversaturated, but the image is generally fine. Contrast is excellent.
WARNER BROS. has given this release a Dolby Digital 2.0 mix. There are some well-placed effects, but little in the way of bass. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
WARNER BROS. has included some extras. Commentary for two episodes are included with the series' producers. Another disc offers deleted scenes and more. All in all, a decent beginning for a great series. "SMALLVILLE" is one of those rare series, that actually improves as it moves on, so we're looking forward to what WARNER BROS. does with future releases!
