SRP $19.98 1.85:1(16:9) Dolby 2.0 STEREO ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT

Billy Warlock, a former “BAYWATCH” hunk, stars in “SOCIETY,” from Anchor Bay Entertainment.

Weird for the sake of weird doesn’t add up to much, without a good script, and that’s the problem with “SOCIETY.”  Warlock plays a rich kid, estranged from “normal” kids, presumably due to his nutty mother and father and the whole “weird” family dynamic he’s part of.  His sister is extremely sexy, and for some reason the parents relate to her on a level closer to horny high-school peers than as a mom and dad. Throw in some weird dreams, a zombie, and an over-the-top horrific orgy, and it pretty much sums up “SOCIETY,” …the bad, and the not so bad, for there’s nothing really that good about it.

ANCHOR BAY has gone out of the way to provide great transfers for their releases, and this is no exception.  Presented in its proper 1.85:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement, “SOCIETY” has never looked this good.  In spite of its obviously low budget, the transfer makes it look like much more of a studio release than it is.  Colors are rich and vibrant throughout.  Contrast is impressive, with deep blacks and grays. Fleshtones appear natural.

ANCHOR BAY has provided a Dolby 2.0 mix for this presentation.  While one sequence offers some surround effects, the mix is virtually stereo for the rest.  Dialogue is intelligible but limited in fidelity.

ANCHOR BAY has provided an audio commentary with this release. Director Brian Yuzna  displays a real passion for his work, but unfortunately he seems to have deluded himself that it has any redeeming qualities other than one  titillating scene for exploitation.
