LIVE ENTERTAINMENT has packaged the entire Pioneer Special Edition version of Sophie's Choice onto one dual layer DVD. While the image is at times sharper than the laserdisc version, there are moments wherein the limitations of DVD compression are visible. Watcing Nathan's image through a window on a train at the beginning, one sees the pulsing-still image errors that occasionally happen on some titles. However, for the most part, the transfer is sharp and the sound is excellent. An outstanding audio commentary with the film's director is offered on an alternate track. In addition, a first-rate documentary, featuring interviews with the cast and author William Styron is also included. It alone makes this a tempting offer.

John Fusco's script to YOUNG GUNS takes some strong liberties with historical fact, it's doubtful that halucinogens impacted the real outlaws as they do here. Still, the film has a steady pace, exciting camera movement, and plenty of tense moments. The DVD transfer looks much sharper than the previous laser version with excellent color balance and contrast. The Dolby Surround sound is less active than we'd prefer, however, there are a few shoot-outs wherein all speakers come alive.
