After an unmanned spaceship searching for alien life, gets pulled through a wormhole, crashing on a distant planet, NASA decides to send another ship to find it, and hopefully resolve the burning question as to whether "we are alone." Uncertain whether humans can survive and accomplish the trip through a wormhole, a team of chimps is sent instead. Luckily, the crew is made up of some great voice talents, including Cheryl Hines(Curb Your Enthusiasm) Andy Samberg(terrific)and Patrick Warburton. Samberg voices "HAM III," the grandson of the first chimp in space, happier to work in a circus than to take on the prestigious line of "exploration."
While obviously intended and written, with a sharp focus towards very young audiences, there's still a certain endearing magic to the film, likely to win over adult viewers. It's never as witty as the superior "KUNG FU PANDA," but "SPACE CHIMPS" has undeniable charm, and fares to be a much better family film than most that have been released in 2008.
The film's animation design isn't up there with the likes of "KUNG FU PANDA" either, but it's still pleasing. Some of the jokes are created with a wink to adults, offering the kind of tongue-and-cheek, self-effacing humor that elevates this kind of "kid's" movie above many others.
FOX has provided the correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio for this 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 blu-ray. Colors are rich and the overall image is beautiful. While "SPACE CHIMPS" doesn't relish in the kind of detail found in a film like "WALL-E," there's still enough quality and depth to please even the most scrutinizing observer. Depth is consistently impressive with the majority of scenes providing the "jump-off-the-screen" detail one hopes for with blu-ray.
FOX has provided a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix. It's not only an aggressive mix, but extremely creative as well. Directional, panning and bass effects are used effectively to enhance scene-after-scene with great impact. It's really surprising to find how much attention to detail this mix has been given.
A few extras are offered including: pop up trivia, a cast and crew examination, and trailers.
