SRP $27.95 1.85:1(16:9) DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 COLUMBIA TRISTAR

REVOLUTION STUDIOS has already released two mediocre comedies through COLUMBIA TRISTAR, "TOMCATS" and "THE NEW GUY.  While neither of them were very good, "THE NEW GUY" was a masterpiece compared to "TOMCATS."  Well, now "TOMCATS" should be considered a masterpiece when compared to their newest collaboration, "STEALING HARVARD."

Jason Lee and Leslie Mann star as John and Elaine, a hard-working couple, who've finally managed to save enough money for their dream home.  Just as their savings have reached $30,000.00, John's sister reminds him, not only that his niece has been accepted to Harvard, but of a promise he'd made long before.  John promised his niece he'd pay for her education if she was accepted. It's intended to be a witty plot conflict to have John in a situation wherein he must choose whether to honor his girlfriend, or his promise, but this set of circumstances never really pushes any buttons for the audience.  John, feels the need to live up to his word, suggesting he has integrity and honor, but after consulting with his friend, Duff(Tom Green) the duo embark on a crime spree, hoping to obtain the necessary funds.  So, which is it? John's a good guy, with a moral compass, or one without it?  The film wants the viewers to believe the former, while he elects to become a criminal.  Luckily, a police detective is on their trail!  And, "no," there's no tension to this sub-plot!

There are actually a few decent jokes scattered about, but, most of the film just isn't funny. And, more importantly, even at just 82 minutes, it feels long!

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has preserved the film's 1.85:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9 enhancement. The image is generally slick, with colors that are actually rich and vibrant. However, there is some minor grain in a few scenes.  Fleshtones appear natural.

The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is restrained. There are a few surround moments, but generally the directional effects are delegated to the front soundstage.  Most of the time, sound is focused on the center channel. Even popular songs lack and prominence in the side speakers.

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has provided a "deleted scenes section.  Only two of the scenes have any substance to them, and while letterboxed, still lack 16:9 enhancement.

The best part of this dvd presentation is the "Trailers" section, offering trailers for Jack Nicholson's upcoming "ANGER MANAGEMENT, "DARKNESS FALLS" and others.  They're all letterboxed, with 16:9 enhancement, and in Dolby Digital 5.1!
