SRP $26.99 1.33:1 DOLBY DIGITAL STEREO PARAMOUNT

A title we’d never heard of, but now consider to be a discovered gem and one of the funniest shows we’ve ever seen, “STELLA: SEASON ONE” is now available on dvd from PARAMOUNT.

It’s certainly not for everyone, probably much in the same way viewers either thought of Chris Elliot’s “GET A LIFE” was either witty or stupid.  This reviewer thought that series was brilliant!

“STELLA” follows three its three main characters, Michael Ian Black, David Wain and Michael Showalter playing themselves, as they act bizarrely to everyday situations ala “SEINFELD” or find themselves in bizarre situations and act even more bizarre! In one episode, a character performs open heart surgery to no avail, without any equipment in an apartment on an ailing landlord.  In many ways, its humor reflects the random wit found in “THE FAMILY GUY” but with live action.

A scene in the first episode brilliantly spoofs Jennifer Beals’ audition in “FLASHDANCE” but it’s much more clever and impressive than any of the other sketches that have tried to do this over the past decades.

The sheer confidence and determination to display the kind of humor that is provided here, without big setups or explanations is daring and innovative.

“STELLA” deserves to be seen and it makes a great addition to any dvd collection.

All of Season One’s ten episodes are included over two discs.

PARAMOUNT has provided the correct 1.33:1 aspect ratio. Colors are dead on and contrast is flawless. It’s a slick looking transfer with no artifacts.

PARAMOUNT has provided a Dolby Digital Stereo mix. There’s nothing in the way of surround involvement, but the dynamic range is terrific and it’s a very solid mix with perfectly calibrated dialogue levels.

PARAMOUNT has provided some extras for this release.

“THE HISTORY OF STELLA” is a lengthy gabfest with the three actors kicking back and discussing the development of the show. It’s also very funny at times.

There are deleted scenes, which are actually hysterical, as well as bloopers.

Commentaries are also included for episodes and they’re often very funny and engaging. THIS IS A GREAT SELECTION FOR ANY COLLECTOR!!!!
