One of the great advantages of reviewing blu-rays for a website, is the opportunity to discover some great films, that would never be seen otherwise. This reviewer had no interest in seeing the film in theaters or during its previous dvd release. However, the third opportunity on blu-ray was the charm! The film is built around the "Broken Lizards" comedy group.
The local division of the state highway patrol of Spurbery, don't take their job too seriously. Preferring fishing to writing tickets, giving a hard time to drivers, rather than helping them,...they're about to be replaced by more serious cops. The recent murder in their town sets in motion a chain of events, leading these clowns to become more diligent, if not serious, in solving a real crime, before it's too late for their jobs.
While the plot is simple, and most of the film feels like skits put together with loose thread, "SUPER TROOPERS" achieves what it sets out to do very well. There are consistently huge comedy payoffs, and the guys are likeable enough to wish this film was only the first in a series involving them.
FOX has provided the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio for this 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 blu-ray. The image has limitations due to its obvious low-budget, but detail is typically impressive. There are some images that fall flat, but many more offer wonderful depth. Colors, while not vibrant, still manage to look solid. Contrast varies in quality, and the darkest scenes lack the depth of bigger FOX blu-ray films. Still, especially considering the low-budget, "SUPER TROOPERS" looks impressive throughout.
FOX has provided a DTS-HD MASTER AUDIO 5.1 mix. While not an aggressive mix, surrounds and discrete effects kick in with a punch. Ambient effects are well handled throughout and dialogue is perfectly balanced. The mix isn't reference quality, but it's far more immersive than most comedy mixes have been on blu-ray or dvd format.
A featurette, quasi-documentary is offered, along with three commentaries(one, very funny) deleted scenes and trailers. Only the trailers are presented in full HD.
