"SWIMFAN" is "FATAL ATTRACTION" for teens. It really is an accurate description, and while the mere fact that it implies it's somewhat of a rip-off(It is!) would make many feel it best to steer clear from this film, they'd be mistaken. As much as it's insulting to be so blatant in its approach, it's also terrific fun! "FATAL ATTRACTION" was a great film, and a good due to the way its adult characters had to deal with, not only complex moral issues, but the ramifications these brought to such "adult" byproducts, as "family," "careers," and more. The "cheater" in "SWIMFAN" is a high-school senior with a scholarship to college on the horizon as a swimmer. He's also got a beautiful girlfriend, Shiri Appleby, whom he cheats on with a new girl in school, Erika Christensen. When he feels remorseful for his actions, he dumps the latest fling, and she doesn't take it too well! Of course, a high-school girl "scorned" isn't the same thing as a "woman" scorned, and cheating in high school, while wrong, isn't nearly the same thing as "adultery." So, when Christensen begins to display her psychotic tendencies, they come across as more funny than scary.
Still, "SWIMFAN" is really fun! It's silly as hell for the most part, but even the unintentional laughs make this more entertaining than most films.
FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT has provided a fine, if imperfect transfer! The film's correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio is intact, with 16:9 enhancement. While the colors are solid, the image has a soft look in many spots. Contrast is decent, although the black and gray difference isn't as strong as it typically has been on superior FOX releases, resulting in less clarity during darker scenes. Fleshtones appear natural throughout. A cropped version is offered on the alternate side, but it undermines any of the tension one might otherwise find in the film.
FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT has provided a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix, and it's aggressive! While surrounds are used sporadically, there's great separation in the front soundstage, as well as an effective .1(LFE) presence. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT has provided a surprising amount of extras for this release. The main actors, Jesse Bradford and Erika Christensen are featured, along with director John Polson, on an audio commentary. The best thing about it is the way all three express their pride in the film. They really believe it's terrific, and seem to have no clue as to any of its voluminous problems.
FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT has also included ten deleted scenes, but while letterboxed, they're in mediocre shape and not enhanced for 16:9 screens.
One extra, only available on the cropped side, is "THE GIRLFRIEND FROM HELL." It's a short featurette wherein we can hear the cast discuss their approach to the roles.
