SONY has marked the long-awaited debut of the “blu-ray” format with titles that vary from exciting to ho-hum. The original “TERMINATOR” is one of the better titles, not just because of the superior quality of high definition, but it’s also a film worthy of being added to any film lover’s collection. ”THE TERMINATOR” has been revisited several times for dvd releases over the years, but all suffered from excessive grain problems.
SONY’s “BLU-RAY” release has improved greatly on the grain problem, although there are still plenty of grainy scenes, even here. The proper 1.85:1 ratio is intact and colors are much more vibrant than ever before. The grain gives the film a grittier look than its sequel had, and the image is a much more impressive presentation than available before.
SONY has provided a PCM 5.1 mix for this release. The “PCM” means that there is no compression on the audio! It’s a huge improvement over any previous soundmix!!! There are plenty of surround effects throughout this film, and not only are the discrete effects more abundant, but they also have a wider range of fidelity now. Dialogue always suffered in various scenes on previous dvd renditions, but not so here. The dialogue is perfectly rendered, no matter how many layers of effects surround it.
Several extras have been included:
“THE TERMINATOR: A RETROSPECTIVE” is a nearly 20 minute long documentary, featuring previous interviews with Cameron and Schwarzenegger.
“TERMINATED” offers deleted scenes, with the option of Cameron’s commentary.
