MGM-THIEF OF BAGDADOne of the best romantic adventure films of all time has found its way to dvd, courtesy of MGM. “THE THIEF OF BAGDAD” was actually made over 60 years ago, and it’s lost none of its charm, and it’s one of those rare great films that’s a great selection for an entire family to gather together for and enjoy, at any time, but especially the holiday season.
Sabu stars as a young thief, whom wins favor with a Prince after helping him escape from imprisonment by an evil sorcerer. This movie’s got everything going for it! In addition to some effects, which have lost none of their appeal, even when compared to the more costly CGI effects of today, it also has a wonderful script, wonderful sets, a beautiful princess and more!
Alexander Korda’s films all have a stamp of excellence on them, and this is no exception. He realized, as did all great directors, that the “story” was key to a film’s success. Everything about the story here is captivating.
While there are romantic overtones, the dark menacing environment in which all of the characters live is always present, as Bagdad citizens are executed on a regular basis for minor infractions.
Again, children of all ages will be delighted by this great film, but just as importantly, the parents and adults with them, will enjoy it equally. Miklos Rozsa provided the score to the film, and it ranks with the best scores of all times.
MGM has presented the image to “THE THIEF OF BAGDAD” in its proper 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The colors are surprisingly rich and vibrant. While there are some scratches and specks, the image in general, almost has a restored look to it. It’s far better than “any” presentation this reviewer has ever seen, while either at the AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE” or on television.
The monaural audio is adequate, but less than perfect. While dialogue is intelligible in virtually every scene, there is some minor distortion in a few scenes. Still, the picture looks terrific, and the audio, while not as splendid, is still ok.
A trailer is included. A surprise addition to this release is a Spanish dubbed option.
