"TITUS" has been released as yet another "SPECIAL EDITION" dvd from FOX!  Based on the play "Titus Andronicus" by Shakespeare, "TITUS" stars Anthony Hopkins in the title role, as a Roman General seeking revenge for the deaths of 21 of his sons in battle.  Of course, as with much by Shakespeare, there's plenty of greed and madness to spread around.  While arguably not one of the playwright's best works, Shakespeare at his worst is better than many at their finest!

Hopkins in the title role is wonderful, and he's complimented with equally outstanding performances from Jessica Lange and others.  Director Julie Taymor creates an innovative look for the film, and this staging of Shakespeare is like nothing ever seen before.  In both its staging and design, "TITUS" is monumental!  While some may be turned off by the violence, Taymor's approach is to be commended.  It's not anything like a Peckinpah film, but just as excruciating after a while.

The transfer is stunning.  The 2.35:1 ratio is well suited as Taymor uses every piece of the frame to great advantage.  FOX has presented this with 16:9 enhancement, adding greatly to the depth and clarity of the images.  Even in the darkest moments, there's great contrast!  The dolby digital 5.1 sound mix is also innovative at times, but rear speaker effects are minimal.  Because the dialogue is so important, most of the directional effects are subtle and serve to respond to, and or, emphasize the spoken word.

There's a great deal of supplements here.  Taymore provides a terrific commentary, filled with energy about the task of making a first film, and offers entertaining stories behind much of what made the film work.  Hopkins also provides a commentary.  While he's always wonderful to listen to, there are great gaps of silence between scenes from time to time.  The wonderful score by Eliot Goldenthal is also provided as an isolated track.  Add to this a Q&A with students at Columbia University and a wonderful featurette, and you've got a wonderful package!!!
