While many actors have understandable difficulty in stating their favorite performance, Gregory Peck never had to pause before stating "ATTICUS FINCH" as his marker and understandably so. It's one of the greatest and most memorable performances on film and a terrific film as well.
Based on the Harper Lee novel, "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" offers a story built around a racial incident in Alabama, wherein a good man, Atticus Finch, defends an innocent black man against charges of rape. While that subject is a major theme, there are many important relationships and messages explored during the film, all handled with honesty and are all too rare in modern cinema. "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" offers excellent direction, writing, and performances and it's a helluva courtroom drama too!
Although the last dvd transfer for "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" wasn't bad, this new "LEGACY SERIES" version is flawless! The black and white imagery is simply wonderful here. Images look well polished throughout and grain, while present in a few instances, is never problematic, and part of the original source material. The 1.66:1 aspect ratio has been enhanced for 16:9 viewing.
UNIVERSAL has included a Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 option. The magic of "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" relies on its simple storytelling. The film comes across as magnificent, even on a small black&white tv! But, the improved upon sound mix options is welcome. Effects are non-existent, but the beautiful, haunting score is perfectly complimented in both mixes. The dialogue is crisper than ever. There are no discernible differences between the DOLBY DIGITAL and DTS options.
UNIVERSAL has included some great extras on the 2nd disc. A running commentary with the film's director and producer, although filled with long gaps, manages to be one of the best commentaries to come along in years! Along with the terrific, lengthy, "A CONVERSATION WITH GREGORY PECK", there is still more worth viewing.
