SRP $19.95 1.33:1 DOLBY DIGITAL 2.0 STEREO A&E

A&E has released the documentary "THE TRUE STORY OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT" on dvd. Several programs of a "historical" nature were developed for airing around the debut of Oliver Stone's horrid film, "ALEXANDER".  The History Channel's "THE TRUE STORY OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT" deserves praise not only for being close to meticulous over facts, but for being entertaining as well.

The story of this remarkable young man makes for great entertainment. Any apathetic students need to be aware of all this young man accomplished by age 25! Sure, he was ruthless, crucifying thousands in days, but he was also intelligent, actually having been tutored by the great Aristotle!  While many with more modern means have tried to take over the world, Alexander conquered most of it over 2,300 years ago!

Mixing talking heads with dramatic recreation, "THE TRUE STORY OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT" is gripping for all of its 2 1/2 hour running time!

Stone should've taken note of the casting decisions here.  Everyone here looks perfect in comparison to the studio's horrible choices.  The production values, while obviously with a smaller budget, still manage to look more impressive than the bloated WARNER BROS film!

While the battle scenes are staged with computer graphics, they too, are more impressive than any one of the many, inane, confusing ones staged in Stone's train-wreck of a film.

A&E has provided the correct 1.33:1 aspect ratio for this transfer. Colors are solid throughout.  Benefiting from fine production design, the exotic locations come to vibrant life with rich colors and great detail.  There is minimal grain and artifacts are non-existent.

A&E has provided a Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo mix. There is some minor separation, however most of show is dialogue-driven, with sound delegated to the center channel.  Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
