TURKISH DELIGHT-
Filmgoers thought Director Paul Verhoeven was really trying to push the envelope
with "BASIC INSTINCT", but his earlier films were much more explicit.
ANCHOR BAY has released his film, "TURKISH DELIGHT" on dvd.
The film's plot focuses on two characters whom embark on a series of
sexual episodes making "LAST TANGO IN PARIS" and "9 ½
WEEKS" seem like something from the Nickelodeon Network. It's hard to
watch "TURKISH DELIGHT" without seeing similarities in other films
since, including "CRASH", from Director David Cronenberg.
Verhoeven seems to throw things at the viewer in every scene. There's
enough frontal nudity to surprise most viewers, and while the plot isn't well
developed, the film's captivating throughout. It's very much like rubber-neckers
at a car accident scene. One is easily shocked, but can't help continuing
to watch. The film feels real in every scene! There's no glamour to
the love scenes! The main character has no style whatsoever, and his
lovemaking abilities are rough and often selfish. He's also completely
believable, and the film often feels more like a documentary because of
Verhoeven and the cast's effectiveness!
ANCHOR BAY has presented an outstanding transfer for this release! The
film's original 1.85:1 aspect ratio is intact with 16:9 enhancement.
The soundtrack, while mono, still has decent fidelity to it, making the
film's jazz soundtrack even more enjoyable. The dialogue is
intelligible and free from distortion.
A commentary track with Verhoeven is offered as an option, and it's also quite
entertaining. Verhoeven is totally unabashed here, as in his
other commentaries. It's great to hear someone so proud of pushing the
envelope for what is accepted as "decent". Verhoeven makes
it clear that he's trying to "shock", but at least he's intelligent
and his films
have some purpose, unlike so many directors that can only "shock",
with nothing else to offer.
