COLUMBIA TRISTAR is still finding gold in its vaults. One of the best screwball comedies, “TWENTIETH CENTURY” is now available on dvd.
John Barrymore and Carole Lombard star and it’s a great tribute to them both, showcasing their incredible talent and further proving how untalented most of today’s “comedic” actors really are in comparison. Barrymore plays a egotistic producer(is there another kind?)who upon turning a young actress(Lombard)into a star, tries many years later to get her to return to Broadway and help him regain the stature he once had.
The dialogue is fast and witty, demonstrating again why Charles MacArthur and Ben Hecht were so revered. Howard Hawks directs with a complimentary fast-paced atmosphere making this 91 minute film shoot along so fast that one will be sorry when it’s ended.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has presented the film in its correct 1.33:1 ratio. There are some signs of aging, including minor scratches, but overall, it’s very impressive. Grain, while present, is never obtrusive and detail is superb.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has preserved the film’s mono soundtrack quite well. There are only a few instances wherein the dialogue is a little hard to discern. The great majority of the time, it’s perfect. Background hiss is minimal.
