This reviewer had low expectations before watching “ULTIMATE X.”   Not one to have ever been interested in watching “Extreme Sports” on MTV or elsewhere, watching a film entirely devoted to skateboarding, biking and other “over-the-edge” sports, didn’t leave much room for optimism.  However, “ULTIMATE X” managed to surprise and delight! 

Director/writer Bruce Hendricks has utilized interviews and terrific camerawork to capture a wide range of extreme sporting contests built around the “Olympic” type events making up this film.

The film’s exciting visuals are combined with a heart-pumping soundtrack that really gets the adrenalin going. 
 
For those unfamiliar with “EXTREME SPORTS,” “ULTIMATE X” provides a pretty candid look at what makes up these events.  In addition to many exciting moments wherein the contestants accomplish some bold, and possibly stupid stunts, we also witness the aftermath, wherein the seriously injured are also shown. 

BUENA VISTA has provided the correct full-frame aspect ratio with “THX” certification.  While it doesn’t have the same impact as this (made for IMAX” film achieves on the big screen, it still looks great!  The image has terrific clarity, and colors are solid throughout.  Contrast is excellent, with deep blacks and grays. Fleshtones appear natural. 

BUENA VISTA has included both a Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 option for this release!  While not filled with the virtually non-stop surround effects, we’d expected, there are enough surround/directional effects to make it impressive.  The soundmix takes advantage of a blend of punk/rock music, boosted prominently throughout all speakers.  There is also plenty of bass, enhancing the sensation to the more tense moments. 

BUENA VISTA has included a fair amount of extras for this release.  These supplements are offered within a variety of menu options.  These include numerous featurettes, music videos and more.  One of the best supplements features the owner of a skateboard shop, discussing the sport’s history.  But, there’s so much here, everyone will have their favorites.  There’s also a “THX” optimizer test.
